Earlier this month, our Project Manager, Carla Wood, and Trustee, Jasper Slingsby, together with their families, joined the Keeping it Wild weekend in the Cederberg, hosted by @love_our_trails and @sustainableceder.

The weekend brought together conservation practitioners, land stewards, and partners for a hands-on experience in one of the Cape Floristic Regionโ€™s most remarkable landscapes. It was a meaningful opportunity to connect with work on the ground and reflect on shared conservation priorities.

The timing of the gathering felt particularly meaningful as the Cederberg continues to recover from recent fires and storms. Our thoughts remain with all those affected, and with the ongoing recovery efforts across the region.

To read more about the Keeping it Wild weekend, visit the @love_our_trails website.

In March, we bid farewell to the Table Mountain Fu In March, we bid farewell to the Table Mountain Fundโ€™s longest-serving Board member, Justin Smith, after an extraordinary seventeen years of dedicated service.

Over nearly two decades, Justin has been far more than a Trustee. As a trusted line manager to the management team, he provided steady leadership, thoughtful guidance, and unwavering support. Always eager to roll up his sleeves, he was just as likely to be found around the board table as out in the field.

Justinโ€™s passion, wisdom, and deep commitment to conservation have helped shape the Table Mountain Fund into what it is today. While we say goodbye to him as a Trustee, we are grateful that he remains part of the broader conservation sector and part of our community.

Protecting one of the Western Capeโ€™s most important wetlands requires more than ecological action; it requires strong legal support.

The Verlorenvlei, a RAMSAR wetland of international importance, is a critical biodiversity and birding area within the G30 catchment. While parts of the catchment fall within the Moutonshoek Protected Environment, large portions, including highly threatened ecosystems such as Swartland Shale Renosterveld and lowland freshwater wetlands, remain unprotected.

Supported through the Table Mountain Fundโ€™s ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—บ๐—ฒ, this project, led by the Biodiversity Law Centre, is working to address growing threats to the catchment. These include over-abstraction of water, unlawful dam construction, cultivation within sensitive estuarine zones, and mining pressures within protected areas.

By working alongside partners and community activists, the project is using legal interventions to strengthen environmental governance, protect critical ecosystems, and support the long-term sustainability of this unique landscape.

Through this project, Grootvadersbosch Conservancy is working with rural youth to explore and understand the health of their local rivers using fun, hands-on miniSASS and SASS5 activities.
Together, they aim to create five โ€œState of the Riverโ€ reports - sharing whatโ€™s really happening in the rivers where they live and play. This not only feeds into a national citizen science movement but also helps young people build knowledge, confidence, and a sense of responsibility for their environment.

By raising awareness and encouraging local action, this project is helping communities, and especially youth, become champions for healthier rivers and a better future.

Led by the Paddavlei Eco Group and supported by @wcchermanus, Overstrand Municipality, and @capenature, the project is building local skills in alien clearing, citizen-science water monitoring, and wetland stewardship.

Funded through the Table Mountain Fundโ€™s ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ฃ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—บ๐—ฒ, the initiative also places youth at the centre of conservation, with local learners helping monitor water quality, plant trees, and remove invasive species.

One of the projectโ€™s most visible outcomes is the 5km Paddavlei Trail, created by community members and local partners. Linking the wetland to the beach and surrounding milkwood forest, the trail has become a space for monthly fun runs, walks, and clean-ups that bring residents together while encouraging ongoing care for the vlei.

What was once neglected and used for dumping is slowly being reclaimed by the Hawston community as a place to walk, learn, and reconnect with nature.

This project aims to secure new Protected Areas across two key regions of the Cape Floristic Region: the Thyspunt to Cape Recife Coastal Corridor in the Eastern Cape, and the CapeNature Central Landscape: Boland Management Landscape Unit in the Western Cape, including the Bottelary Hills Renosterveld Conservancy, Klapmutskop, Simonsberg Conservancy and Sir Lowryโ€™s Pass Conservancy.

Alongside formal site protection, the project will strengthen the capacity of Management Authorities in the Eastern Cape, supporting more effective long-term conservation management.

A further component will focus on developing and assessing a CFR-specific biodiversity credit system and framework to help address funding constraints and incentivise landowners and institutions to contribute to conservation efforts.

This project supports the City of Cape Townโ€™s efforts to expand its Protected Area network through the implementation of the BioNet, the cityโ€™s systematic spatial biodiversity plan. By proactively engaging 88 priority landowners across both the city and its buffer zone, the project aims to unlock new biodiversity stewardship opportunities and secure ecologically significant land for formal protection.

The goal is to declare a minimum of 12 new sites, adding at least 1 300 hectares to Cape Townโ€™s network of protected natural spaces. Strengthening ecological connectivity within an urban environment, this initiative contributes to safeguarding the Cape Floristic Regionโ€™s biodiversity and supports South Africaโ€™s progress toward the 30x30 global conservation target.

Supporting the long-term vision of ecological connectivity within the Cape Floristic Region, this project aims to advance the Protected Area expansion work of the Eden to Addo Corridor Initiative across four key corridors: Robberg, Keurbooms, Bitou, and Langkloof. These Eastern and Western Cape corridors traverse vital Water Source Areas and encompass a diverse range of threatened ecosystems, each playing a critical role in maintaining the integrity, functionality, and resilience of fynbos landscapes.

Building on existing partnerships with @capenature and the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency, the project seeks to catalyse the formal protection of 15 properties within the CFR. Once completed, it will contribute an additional 12 600 hectares to the regionโ€™s Protected Area network, strengthening biodiversity stewardship, securing ecological corridors, and advancing South Africaโ€™s commitment to the global 30x30 biodiversity target.

This project provides critical legal and post-declaration support to private and communal landowners who partner with CapeNature through Biodiversity Stewardship Agreements. By assisting landowners with the legal processes required to declare Nature Reserves and Protected Environments, this project aims to help accelerate the formal expansion of the Cape Floristic Regionโ€™s protected area network.

Funding will be used to cover the legal costs associated with new declarations and to ensure that Private Nature Reserves validated through the PNR Verification and Validation Project fully comply with the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act 57 of 2003 (NEM:PAA). In addition, participating landowners will receive post-declaration support, including training and capacity-building opportunities to strengthen effective reserve management and long-term stewardship.

By empowering landowners and streamlining the legal framework for conservation, this initiative plays a vital role in advancing TMFโ€™s contribution to South Africaโ€™s 30x30 biodiversity target and ensuring that conservation commitments translate into lasting protection on the ground.
