The aim of this project is to respond to an emerging shift from restoration work being seen as a purely income-driven activity towards developing a meaningful appreciation for the ecological, cultural and practical value of fynbos in everyday life, as well as seeking to foster long-term stewardship and pride in indigenous biodiversity.

The project will engage approximately 48 participants from local contractor teams through introductory workshops designed to build foundational awareness and understanding of indigenous vegetation. From this cohort, individuals will be identified for more detailed engagement, including baseline assessments and the selection of eight local “community champions” who will receive targeted support to establish small, locally owned indigenous green spaces within their own communities.

These spaces, including backyard and community-scale plantings focused on cultural and medicinal species, will serve as demonstration sites that strengthen local identity, enable knowledge sharing, and support wider replication of indigenous planting and stewardship practices.

This project aims to strengthen environmental awareness, stewardship and pride in one of the most threatened ecosystems in the Cape Floristic Region through immersive, place-based learning for rural learners.

With less than 5% of lowland renosterveld remaining, the programme responds to the urgent need to reconnect nearby communities with this highly fragmented landscape by providing structured field-based learning at Haarwegskloof Renosterveld Reserve and surrounding renosterveld sites.

Learners will engage directly with biodiversity, ecological processes and conservation challenges through guided veld experiences, with educators extending learning through school-based outreach when access to the reserve is not possible. The programme also strengthens educator capacity to integrate biodiversity themes into classroom teaching, while fostering curiosity, teamwork and ecological understanding through ongoing engagement with threatened renosterveld ecosystems.

This Project aims to develop a community-owned biocultural heritage and regenerative tourism model for Genadendal that integrates Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK), fynbos biodiversity, and cultural heritage into a unified Living Heritage offering, anchored at the Genadendal Mission Museum.

The initiative addresses a gap in the Cape Floristic Region, where tourism and conservation efforts do not always adequately integrate biocultural heritage or promote local ownership, contributing to the loss of intergenerational knowledge and limiting the benefits local communities derive from biodiversity-linked tourism.

Building on existing work in Genadendal, including heritage documentation and honeybush bioeconomy research, the Project will systematically capture and revitalise LEK through oral histories, participatory ecological mapping and intergenerational knowledge exchange processes.

Nature Connect’s Small Grants Facility aims to open doors for new entrants to the conservation community, supporting start-ups, community groups and grassroots initiatives working to benefit nature and people across the Cape Floristic Region.

Having successfully run two previous iterations of the programme with funding from the Table Mountain Fund, Nature Connect is building on this experience to continue supporting new entrants through funding and mentorship. Grants of up to R36,250 are available for practical projects focused on biodiversity, habitat restoration, environmental education, sustainable livelihoods and ecotourism.

Applications for the 2027 Small Grants Programme are now open, with a particular focus on supporting under-resourced communities and encouraging the participation of youth and women.

𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘚𝘺𝘯𝘤

EcoSync is an AI-assisted conservation planning and operations platform designed to strengthen the effectiveness of protected area management and biodiversity stewardship across the Western Cape.

Conservation planning, implementation tracking and reporting can be fragmented and highly technical, often requiring external expertise. EcoSync introduces a guided digital system that enables users to develop, manage and update Protected Area Management Plans and Annual Plans of Operation, linking planning more directly to implementation and reporting.

Rather than replacing existing conservation processes, the platform is designed to support them by connecting field activities and management actions with structured outputs. Activities such as invasive clearing, fire management and biodiversity monitoring can be tracked alongside real-time field evidence and linked to management objectives as they happen.

The one-year pilot will test EcoSync in live conservation landscapes in the Western Cape, helping refine the platform and explore its potential as a scalable tool to improve collaboration, management effectiveness, and participation in biodiversity stewardship. Developed as an open-source project, EcoSync also aims to create a sustainable access model that lets different users engage with the system based on their technical capacity and available resources.

This project aims to establish the Grabouw Forest Information Centre as a community-led conservation and responsible adventure tourism hub within the Kogelberg Biosphere.

The initiative responds to increasing ecological pressure in the Elgin-Grabouw forestry landscape, including land degradation, illegal dumping, wildlife snaring and the loss of formal forestry management following the withdrawal of commercial operators.

The project will train two Biosphere Rangers as NQF4 Eco Rangers and two NQF2 Nature Guides, building local capacity to support environmental management. The trained personnel will conduct regular patrols three days per week, monitoring designated areas and identifying environmental risks and incidents, including illegal dumping and harvesting of resources.

By combining local capacity building, regular monitoring, reliable data collection and public awareness, the initiative aims to create a sustainable, community-driven approach to environmental stewardship in the Kogelberg.

This project aims to strengthen long-term river rehabilitation and community stewardship along the Mosselbank River by creating opportunities for young people from Fisantekraal to become involved in the ongoing restoration of their local river.

Over three years, five young people will be recruited and trained each year as part of the existing Mosselbank River Conservation Team. Through hands-on restoration work and structured mentorship, experienced team members will share practical, field-based knowledge while helping to build local conservation skills and capacity.

The programme will provide training in alien clearing, indigenous planting, water quality monitoring, reporting and site maintenance, alongside opportunities to develop administrative and leadership skills. Environmental education and community outreach will also be expanded, while partnerships with landowners along the Mosselbank River are strengthened.

By combining river rehabilitation with youth development and community engagement, the project aims to build a pathway towards a dedicated, locally based river management team that can help sustain rehabilitation, monitoring and conservation efforts into the future, while improving biodiversity and ecological function along the river corridor.

Wild Hearts aims to connect pre-school children in the Cape Floristic Region with the natural world through structured, curriculum-aligned environmental learning that builds early awareness, curiosity and care for nature.

The programme introduces young learners to key ecosystems and species of the fynbos biome, including wetlands, pollinators, indigenous plants and wildlife. Through 18 interactive lessons using play, storytelling and hands-on activities, children are encouraged to explore the natural world and develop positive environmental attitudes from an early age.

The project will train and mentor 32 Early Childhood Development teachers to deliver these fynbos-focused learning experiences, reaching approximately 1,800 children in the Barrydale/Montagu area and the South Peninsula of Cape Town. Learners will also have opportunities for immersive nature-based experiences at sites including Sanbona Wildlife Reserve and Cape Point.

By helping children build a meaningful connection with nature from an early age, Wild Hearts aims to lay the foundations for a lasting awareness of, and care for, the unique biodiversity of the Cape Floristic Region.

Roots in the Fynbos is a collaborative wilderness education programme designed by the Cape Leopard Trust and Sustainable Ceder to reconnect young people with the beauty and fragility of the Cape Floristic Region.

Through a series of two-night wilderness camps, learners explore the Cederberg mountains, discover the remarkable diversity of the fynbos biome, deepen their understanding of nature conservation, and take part in hands-on restoration efforts of the critically endangered Clanwilliam cedar tree.

The plight of the cedar trees and the leopards of the Cederberg mountains offers a powerful opportunity to cultivate empathy, shift perceptions, and inspire a commitment to conservation.

By connecting young people with their natural heritage, the programme aims to nurture informed, resilient and passionate custodians who are equipped to help protect the Cape Floristic Region.

This project represents the final phase of a long-term initiative to restore degraded areas of Muizenberg Park and transform them into a functional indigenous wetland fynbos mosaic.

Building on wetland and stream rehabilitation completed in 2024 and expanded wetland and lily pond restoration completed in 2025, Phase 3 will restore approximately 700 m² of heavily degraded lawn through invasive clearing, soil rehabilitation and planting of locally appropriate and critically endangered fynbos species.

The project will also expand and deepen existing water features and create seasonal basins to provide additional habitats for amphibians and birdlife, including the Western Leopard Toad.

Earlier this year, the Table Mountain Fund invited organisations across the Cape Floristic Region to submit concept proposals aligned with our Care and Pride Programmes, supporting initiatives that strengthen conservation action, deepen appreciation for fynbos, and build more inclusive connections between people and nature.

The response was incredible. Following a careful consultation and review process, we’re proud to introduce the thirteen projects selected as the newest recipients of TMF funding.

As we close out July, we bid farewell to Bongani Mnisi as he steps down from the Table Mountain Fund Board after nine years of dedicated service.

Over the years, Bongani has brought passion, wisdom, energy and plenty of laughter to every meeting, field visit and discussion. Whether abseiling into the Oorlogskloof gorges, lending his unmistakable voice to our 21st birthday celebrations, engaging meaningfully with learners supported through TMF-funded projects, or encouraging us to think bigger and bolder, he has left an indelible mark on our organisation.

Bongani's lasting legacy has to be his unwavering commitment to keeping people at the heart of conservation. He challenged us to think beyond protecting nature alone, reminding us that conservation is most powerful when it creates lasting opportunities and benefits for the people connected to these landscapes. It is a legacy that will continue to guide and inspire us, and one he can be truly proud of.

Bongani, thank you for your unwavering commitment, thoughtful leadership, infectious enthusiasm and friendship over the past nine years. While we'll certainly miss your presence around the boardroom table, we're grateful that our paths will continue to cross.

Earlier this month, our Project Manager, Carla Wood, and Trustee, Jasper Slingsby, together with their families, joined the Keeping it Wild weekend in the Cederberg, hosted by @love_our_trails and @sustainableceder.

The weekend brought together conservation practitioners, land stewards, and partners for a hands-on experience in one of the Cape Floristic Region’s most remarkable landscapes. It was a meaningful opportunity to connect with work on the ground and reflect on shared conservation priorities.

The timing of the gathering felt particularly meaningful as the Cederberg continues to recover from recent fires and storms. Our thoughts remain with all those affected, and with the ongoing recovery efforts across the region.

In March, we bid farewell to the Table Mountain Fu

In March, we bid farewell to the Table Mountain Fund’s longest-serving Board member, Justin Smith, after an extraordinary seventeen years of dedicated service.

Over nearly two decades, Justin has been far more than a Trustee. As a trusted line manager to the management team, he provided steady leadership, thoughtful guidance, and unwavering support. Always eager to roll up his sleeves, he was just as likely to be found around the board table as out in the field.

Justin’s passion, wisdom, and deep commitment to conservation have helped shape the Table Mountain Fund into what it is today. While we say goodbye to him as a Trustee, we are grateful that he remains part of the broader conservation sector and part of our community.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗹𝗲𝗶 𝗚𝟯𝟬 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

Protecting one of the Western Cape’s most important wetlands requires more than ecological action; it requires strong legal support.

The Verlorenvlei, a RAMSAR wetland of international importance, is a critical biodiversity and birding area within the G30 catchment. While parts of the catchment fall within the Moutonshoek Protected Environment, large portions, including highly threatened ecosystems such as Swartland Shale Renosterveld and lowland freshwater wetlands, remain unprotected.

Supported through the Table Mountain Fund’s 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲, this project, led by the Biodiversity Law Centre, is working to address growing threats to the catchment. These include over-abstraction of water, unlawful dam construction, cultivation within sensitive estuarine zones, and mining pressures within protected areas.

By working alongside partners and community activists, the project is using legal interventions to strengthen environmental governance, protect critical ecosystems, and support the long-term sustainability of this unique landscape.

Funded through TMF’s 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲, the 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄 project is all about young people stepping up to protect the rivers that matter most to them.

Through this project, Grootvadersbosch Conservancy is working with rural youth to explore and understand the health of their local rivers using fun, hands-on miniSASS and SASS5 activities.
Together, they aim to create five “State of the River” reports - sharing what’s really happening in the rivers where they live and play. This not only feeds into a national citizen science movement but also helps young people build knowledge, confidence, and a sense of responsibility for their environment.

By raising awareness and encouraging local action, this project is helping communities, and especially youth, become champions for healthier rivers and a better future.

Nature Connect’s 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲 is a long-term, immersive initiative that supports youth from under-resourced communities to grow into confident, capable environmental leaders.

Supported by the Table Mountain Fund through our 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲, 20–24 learners are selected each year in Grade 6 to begin a seven-year journey. Through immersive experiences, from overnight camps and biodiversity surveys to guided hikes and environmental campaigns, participants develop a strong, lasting connection to the natural world.

Beyond conservation, the programme also builds practical life skills and supports personal development.

By investing in sustained, holistic support, this programme is helping to shape a generation of informed, resilient and engaged environmental leaders.

Through the Table Mountain Fund’s 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲, we are supporting the coordination of the 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, an initiative aimed at strengthening collaboration, advocacy, learning and communication across the diverse network of stakeholders working to conserve this globally significant landscape.

Building on the legacy of Cape Action for People and the Environment (CAPE), the Partnership is coordinated by BirdLife South Africa and Conservation Outcomes. Together, they are driving a collective effort that enables voluntary engagement and knowledge exchange, helping to unlock more coordinated and effective conservation action across the Cape Floristic Region.

At its core, this initiative is about enabling collaboration at a scale that matches the complexity of the challenges facing the region and ensuring its extraordinary biodiversity is conserved for generations to come.
