It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to Au It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to Augustine Morkel. Augustine, who has been the WWF Operations Lead for many years now, provided oversight to the TMF management team. Augustine will leave @wwfsouthafrica at the end of May to take up a position at SANParks, as a specialist on the TMNP โ€“ Reunion Island National Park territory-to-territory cooperation project. We wish Augustine all the best in his new position and have no doubt that our paths will cross again in the near future.

This Breede Estuary Landscape support project aims to generate a ripple effect, where the existing protected areas have an opportunity to synchronize their management and vision for the broader landscape. This will in turn provide a strong foundation to include and work with other landowners in the area towards Biodiversity Stewardship. The last ripple is through the Breede River Estuary Forum by ensuring adequate representation of landowners with input from BirdLife South Africa and Conservation Outcomes. The goal of this project is to enable self-sustaining, effective management into the future through collaboration and a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by the area. There will be a series of collaborative workshops, enabling capacity building and network strengthening of management authorities. It will be essential that there is continuous work investigating landowner willingness to expand the Protected Area Network, as well as to expose landowners to the different categories of Biodiversity Stewardship. The project will also look to gain an understanding of the organisations involved in the Lower Breede River and to investigate opportunities and challenges being faced to ensure synergy and collaboration with other stakeholders, in order to better inform decision-making and open communication channels.

The Western Cape is home to more Critically Endangered butterflies than anywhere else in the country. While butterflies have great public interest, conservationists have not capitalised on using these charismatic, bioindicator species for conservation. In the Western Cape, both the species and their fynbos habitat are unique and increased efforts must be made to protect them. The @the_ewt's Butterflies and Fynbos project aims to identify suitable sites within the known distribution ranges of three Endangered and Critically Endangered fynbos-dependent butterflies; Chrysoritis thysbe schloszae (Moreesburg Opal, CR), Thestor dicksoni warren (Lowland Skolly, CR) and Aloeides lutescens (Worcester Russet, EN) which can be protected through formal protected area declaration or as other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs). The three species have been selected as they are currently under-represented by the protected area network of the Western Cape. Their selection has also been guided by inputs from experts from the Lepidoptera Society of Africa and the @South African National Biodiversity Institute (@sanbi_za).

BirdLife South Africaโ€™s โ€˜Safeguarding the Fynbos of the Kleinโ€™ Project is centred on the highly threatened fynbos habitat and fynbos/ estuarine ecotones bordering the Klein River estuary, near Stanford. The Klein River estuary is one of South Africaโ€™s most important estuaries for conservation. Building on the strong foundation provided by @birdlife_saโ€™s existing Protected Area (PA) expansion work in the landscape, the project will address gaps in the evolving PA network using other conservation models, as well as strengthening partnerships working across the area and improving overall environmental management and post-declaration maintenance. This will include tackling identified environmental management priorities, such as the removal of Invasive Alien Plant (IAP) cover, the restoration of historical wetlands, and fynbos security.

Another @inaturalistorg City Nature Challenge has come to an end and what a fun weekend it was. The TMF team headed out across the Western Cape, with our family and friends, and did our bit to put the Cape Floral Region on the international observations map.

If you havenโ€™t finished loading your observations you have until 8 May 2023. The Southern African team also needs help with identifications. If you have the skills to help please visit the iNaturalist.org City Nature Challenge 2023: City of Cape Town page to find out more about the identification process.

Jakkalsfontein Nature Reserve is located just a short drive from Cape Town, along South Africaโ€™s beautiful and dramatic West Coast. Spanning over 1,800 hectares it is home to pristine fynbos, coastal dune vegetation, and wetland ecosystems, making it a haven for a wide variety of plant and animal species.

Through priority management interventions such as active research and alien vegetation control, residents of Jakkalsfontein are dedicated to preserving and enhancing the areaโ€™s rich biodiversity, which includes five vegetation types (three of which are considered Endangered) and thirty-nine threatened plant species.

Jakkalsfontein is a wonderful example of Biodiversity Stewardship in motion with concerned and engaged landowners. As a Private Nature Reserve, it is participating in the voluntary Verification and Validation of older existing sites to align with the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act of 2003 (NEMPA).

Offering a unique opportunity to experience the beauty and diversity of South Africa's West Coast, visitors to the reserve can explore its many hiking trails, enjoy a picnic or braai, or simply take in the breathtaking natural beauty of the area. These visits must, however, be pre-arranged and visitors must be accompanied by a Ranger.

Situated on the Groenberg Mountain outside of Wellington in the Cape Winelands District of the Western Cape, @foxenburg is a wonderful example of a working farm and a Nature Reserve coexisting on the same property. Visitors to the estate can indulge in award-winning handcrafted goat's cheese, yoghurts, and organic extra virgin olive oil while fully immersing themselves in the area's breathtaking natural beauty.

Home to beautiful and threatened Shale Fynbos and critically endangered Shale Renosterveld, Foxenburg Nature Reserve forms part of a bigger landscape effort to protect one of the largest remaining pieces of Renosterveld over various properties, and is a long-standing member of the Agter-Groenberg Renosterveld Conservancy.

Foxenburg joined the @capenature Stewardship Programme as part of its pilot phase and in 2009 it was officially proclaimed as a Nature Reserve. The area has also been formally recognized as a priority biodiversity site within the CFR. Since joining the CapeNature Stewardship Programme the partnership has grown from strength to strength ensuring effective management of the Nature Reserve where it is most required.

TMFโ€™s ongoing support of CapeNatureโ€™s Biodiversity Stewardship Programme has proudly contributed to the restoration and protection of critical biodiversity areas such as Foxenburg Nature Reserve.

A short 45min drive from Cape Town, up the West Coastโ€™s R27, you will find the spectacular Grotto Bay Private Nature Reserve. The 356 ha reserve was proclaimed in 2002 and forms part of the Cape West Coast Biosphere reserve which was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2000.

The reserve is home to a 60 ha housing estate and offers a range of activities including a hiking trail that runs along the coastline and through some of the reserveโ€™s stunning Strandveld and Sandveld bush. In Spring, during flower season, the reserve is a magical blanket of colour and it is truly worth a visit to witness this natural spectacle. The reserve is also home to over 120 species of birds, as well as duiker, steenbok, greysbok, ostriches, tortoise, and other wildlife.

Situated in the Overberg Region of the Western Cape, the Van Der Stel Cluster lies in the low-lying area between Groenlandberg and the Riviersonderend mountain range, creating the last viable corridor linking these two ranges. Made up of four adjoining protected areas, namely Eagle Rock Nature Reserve, Klein Ezeljagt Nature Reserve, Diepklowe Private Nature Reserve (@porcupinehills) and Piet Maree Nature Reserve, the cluster represents a large continuous area of fynbos and Renosterveld with associated transition zones between the vegetation types and edaphic interfaces. All four properties are home to a diverse array of fauna and flora, including the Critically Endangered Western Rรปens Shale Renosterveld, which has only 13% remaining of which less than 1% is formally conserved. Several Red Data Book plants are found on the cluster, including Protea restionifolia, Peucedanum pungens, Babiana purpurea, Gladiolus recurvus, Amphithalea bowiei and Erica pilosiflora ssp pilosiflora.

The newly created Verreaux's Trail, formed in collaboration with @capenature, @wwfsouthafrica, The Table Mountain Fund and @conservation.at.work, traverses across all four properties and is a spectacular way for guests to the region to view the beautiful valley. This trail is named after the resident pair of breeding black eagles.

Just outside Riebeek Kasteel, in the Swartland region of the Western Capeโ€™s Winelands district, you will find Elandsberg Nature Reserve, where guests to the luxurious Bartholomeus Klip Farmhouse can enjoy walking, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, birdwatching and educational nature drives. This pristine 4000 ha reserve is home to eland, springbuck, black wildebeest, zebra, bontebok, gemsbok, baboons, bat-eared foxes, caracal, multiple indigenous reptile and bird species, and has played a pivotal role in the Quagga project. It is also importantly a critical conservation area for two rare fynbos vegetation types, Swartland Alluvium Fynbos and Swartland Shale Renosterveld, both critically endangered habitats boast an extensive list of highly threatened and endemic plant species and provide refuge for many highly threatened species. One such important inhabitant is the endangered geometric tortoise, one of the worldโ€™s rarest reptiles. After a fire swept through Elandsberg in 2012 and burnt through most of the geometric tortoise habitat, a concerted and magnanimous effort by the reserve ensured refugia, enabling maximum recruitment and survival of the affected animals. Through ongoing research and protection, the reserve is working to ensure the survival of this endangered tortoise. In recognition of its importance to conservation, Elandsberg Nature Reserve was the first reserve approached and willing to enter into CapeNatureโ€™s Biodiversity Stewardship Programme. It was declared a S23 Nature Reserve, in terms of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, in order to safeguard the reserve and all of its inhabitants in perpetuity and contributes significantly to the provincial and national conservation estate.

Over the years, the Table Mountain Fund has invest Over the years, the Table Mountain Fund has invested approximately R25 million into land purchase, capacity building of and collaboration between partners, restoration of priority biodiversity contained within protected areas, and formal and informal protection of biodiversity through the Biodiversity Stewardship Programme.

Biodiversity stewardship is an approach to protect and manage land in priority biodiversity areas through an agreement between private and communal landowners and the relevant conservation authority. It recognises the landowners as the custodians of biodiversity and, since the start of the programme, TMF's role has been to provide financial assistance to these landowners who voluntarily sign their land up for the benefit of us all โ€“ and our future generations.

Since TMFโ€™s inception, we have positioned oursel Since TMFโ€™s inception, we have positioned ourselves to be pivotal in enabling and supporting the growth of the protected area network of the CFR. Ensuring that our expansion strategies are underpinned by scientific and systematic biodiversity planning and a healthy dose of pragmatism, the local conservation community has acted as pioneers on the global stage when it comes to establishing private protected areas and unlocking resources to ensure the longevity of our biodiversity. Since the first provincial protected area expansion strategy of 2010, the protected area network has grown by approximately 40%. And TMF was there every step of the way.
