Protecting and restoring the natural wilderness of Table Mountain and the rich biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom. #fynbosforever

As part of the Table Mountain Fundโ€™s Care Progra As part of the Table Mountain Fundโ€™s Care Programme, Nature Connect has been appointed as a facility to issue small grants on TMFโ€™s behalf. The Small Grants Project provides funding and mentorship to community-based organisations and NPOs in the Cape Floristic Region, supporting environmental conservation, awareness, and sustainability efforts.

These grants are designed to welcome new individuals and organisations into the conservation sector while promoting biodiversity, community participation, youth involvement, and sustainable livelihoods.

Five NPOs and community groups were selected for the 2025 funding cycle and to date, the successful organisations have had a busy and productive year.

The 2025 grantees are:

On Monday, in celebration of International Womenโ€™s Month and the 15th anniversary of @brave_rockgirl, the NGO proudly unveiled its 66th SAFE SPACE bench, located beside the Table Mountain Cableway ticket office.

This stunning mosaic bench is more than just a resting place โ€” it stands as a powerful symbol of strength, resilience, and adventure in nature. Designed by the young women of Daring Disa, a BRAVE Rock Girl project that introduces underserved girls to the Cape Floristic Region and trains them as future conservationists and environmentalists, the bench was created with guidance from renowned mosaic artist Lovell Friedman. Adorned with rare red disas, a leopard, and the Table Mountain Fundโ€™s beautiful pink Protea compacta, the bench highlights the critical need to conserve wild spaces for both humans and wildlife. It carries the powerful message: โ€œBuilding Strength and Resilience Through Adventure in Natureโ€, reflecting the heart of the Daring Disa initiative.

Alongside the @sanparkstablemountain, the @tablemountainca, @rockefellerfdn, and @capeleopardtrust, TMF is proud to have supported this inspiring initiative as part of our Pride Programme.

The Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) is a globally recognised natural wonder, celebrated for its rich biodiversity and iconic landmarks. Established in 1998, TMNP is one of the few national parks in the world located within a large cosmopolitan city. This unique location, while a major tourist drawcard, also presents a set of distinct challenges.

As a World Heritage Site, TMNP is not only a vital natural resource but also a hotspot for environmental crimes such as abalone and rock lobster poaching, illegal bark stripping, and the harvesting of fynbos species. The spillover of urban crime into the parkโ€™s open-access areas further compounds these challenges.
In response, in 2021, SANParks launched the Sea, Air and Mountain (SEAM) Rangers initiative, which has proven highly effective in addressing these issues through proactive law enforcement and crime prevention efforts.

To further strengthen this approach, in late 2024, SANParks TMNP and Conservation Outcomes, with funding from the Table Mountain Fund, facilitated a rigorous recruitment process to select 24 additional SEAM Field Rangers to join the existing group of 16 rangers. Over 300 candidates applied, with 24 selected to undergo specialised training in 2025.

It was with great pride that TMF attended the pass out parade for the new SEAM Unit at Cape Point today (31 March 2025). This second cohort of rangers will expand the teamโ€™s capacity to tackle anti-poaching efforts and ensure visitor safety โ€“ enhancing park safety, protecting biodiversity, and ensuring the parkโ€™s territorial integrity.

While this is an unusual project for TMF to support, by funding the training of specialised Field Rangers, through SANParks Honorary Rangers, we are assisting our conservation partners to tackle environmental and social crimes, drive economic development through job creation, and, importantly, we are strengthening our longstanding relationship with SANParks.

SANParks is embarking on a landscape approach to conservation by creating a living landscape mosaic of conservation and production landscapes with differing legal status and management regimes. The aim is to connect existing protected and conserved areas to bring about ecological sustainability while unlocking social and economic benefits for adjacent communities. The project will a) provide a technical assistance fund to SANParks to facilitate negotiations, land purchase, subdivisions and support landowners who have committed their lands to be included as part of National Parks; and b) support the appointment of a SANParks intern as a Living Landscape officer. The focal area will be on buffer zones for Agulhas, Bontebok, Garden Route and West Coast National Parks.

Despite extensive research and conservation efforts, the population of the critically endangered Widdringtonia cedarbergensis (wallichii) (Clanwilliam cedar) continues to shrink. Due to their sparse distribution patterns, individual isolated trees in some localities are now most likely selfing rather than cross-pollinating. Essential for long-term conservation is understanding 1) if there is genetic structure in the cedars, 2) whether there has been inbreeding within the stands, 3) what proportion of seed is resultant from self-fertilization and 4) whether selfing reduces seed and sapling viability. This University of Cape Town project will specifically investigate if there has been inbreeding within the depleted stands in order to inform appropriate seed collection strategies and maximise genetic diversity in tree planting conservation efforts in the Cederberg.

South Africaโ€™s growing developmental pressures, South Africaโ€™s growing developmental pressures, linked to ever-increasing urbanisation and agricultural expansion, have led to significant natural habitat loss across the Cape Floristic Region. This has been exacerbated in many areas by the encroachment of alien vegetation. While fynbos is classified as a fire-dependent vegetation type, too frequent fires are also threatening certain species that are unable to re-establish themselves (when adult plants from these species are destroyed their seed banks become exhausted, which can bring about local extinction).

The Table Mountain Fund, along with our dedicated partners, has worked tirelessly to conserve the natural wonders of the Cape Floral Kingdom, but there is much more to do as the threats to this unique World Heritage Site are mounting every day.

Join us, as we work to protect and restore the rich biodiversity of the Cape Floral Region, allowing people and nature to thrive.

As modern development continues to challenge ecolo As modern development continues to challenge ecological sustainability, our responsibilityโ€”both locally and globallyโ€”to protect the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) and its essential biodiversity remains paramount. Conservation requires urgent action, and at the Table Mountain Fund (TMF), we take great pride in being a key enabler of these efforts.

TMF occupies a unique position in the CFR as the only funding body exclusively dedicated to supporting fynbos conservation projects. Our hands-on management team plays an active role in shaping the regionโ€™s conservation agenda. We offer consistent and reliable funding opportunities, providing small and micro-grants that enable stakeholders to launch and sustain impactful conservation initiatives across the region.

The Table Mountain Fund takes its name from our ic The Table Mountain Fund takes its name from our iconic mountain, not only because of its symbolic significance but also due to the early focus of scientific and botanical research in this area. However, Table Mountain is just one part of a much larger natural treasureโ€”the Cape Floral Kingdom. Although the smallest of the worldโ€™s six plant kingdoms, it is, by far, the richest in terms of biodiversity. As such, the TMF is dedicated to the entire Cape Floral Kingdom, with Table Mountain standing as a powerful symbol of this exceptional region.

This year, we are excited to share some of the new projects weโ€™ve funded and the inspiring individuals we work withโ€”dedicated conservationists committed to protecting this awe-inspiring landscape.

Renosterveld is one of the planetโ€™s most biodive Renosterveld is one of the planetโ€™s most biodiverse ecosystems, rich in plant species. However, its fertile shale-derived soils made it an ideal area for agricultural expansion, leading to widespread transformation. By the end of the 20th century, less than 10% of the original Renosterveld remained in its natural state. The tiny, fragmented pockets that still exist are highly vulnerable, which is why this unique vegetation type is classified as โ€œCritically Endangeredโ€ and stands among the worldโ€™s most threatened habitats.

While the plants of the Cape Floral Kingdom often While the plants of the Cape Floral Kingdom often steal the spotlight, the region is also home to remarkable species from the animal kingdom that hold global biodiversity significance. Due to its nutrient-poor soils, fynbos supports few large mammals, and its birdlife, though charming, includes only six endemic species. However, the true hidden gems are its insects, reptiles, and amphibiansโ€”unique, intriguing, and undeniably captivating, even with just a quick glance.
