In December 2022, nations from around the world ag In December 2022, nations from around the world agreed on a new critically important global biodiversity framework. The Table Mountain Fund celebrates this historic agreement and will be aligning our efforts to support the new framework going forward. As we move into 2023 our focus will remain on expanding the Protected Areas Network of the Cape Floristic Region through our newly funded Fynbos Forever Programme projects. A cause that contributes primarily to Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Situated in the Overberg Region of the Western Cape, the Van Der Stel Cluster lies in the low-lying area between Groenlandberg and the Riviersonderend mountain range, creating the last viable corridor linking these two ranges. Made up of four adjoining protected areas, namely Eagle Rock Nature Reserve, Klein Ezeljagt Nature Reserve, Diepklowe Private Nature Reserve (@porcupinehills) and Piet Maree Nature Reserve, the cluster represents a large continuous area of fynbos and Renosterveld with associated transition zones between the vegetation types and edaphic interfaces. All four properties are home to a diverse array of fauna and flora, including the Critically Endangered Western Rรปens Shale Renosterveld, which has only 13% remaining of which less than 1% is formally conserved. Several Red Data Book plants are found on the cluster, including Protea restionifolia, Peucedanum pungens, Babiana purpurea, Gladiolus recurvus, Amphithalea bowiei and Erica pilosiflora ssp pilosiflora.

The newly created Verreaux's Trail, formed in collaboration with @capenature, @wwfsouthafrica, The Table Mountain Fund and @conservation.at.work, traverses across all four properties and is a spectacular way for guests to the region to view the beautiful valley. This trail is named after the resident pair of breeding black eagles.

TMFโ€™s ongoing support of CapeNatureโ€™s Biodiversity Stewardship Programme has proudly contributed to the restoration and protection of critical biodiversity areas such as the Van Der Stel Cluster.

Just outside Riebeek Kasteel, in the Swartland region of the Western Capeโ€™s Winelands district, you will find Elandsberg Nature Reserve, where guests to the luxurious Bartholomeus Klip Farmhouse can enjoy walking, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, birdwatching and educational nature drives. This pristine 4000 ha reserve is home to eland, springbuck, black wildebeest, zebra, bontebok, gemsbok, baboons, bat-eared foxes, caracal, multiple indigenous reptile and bird species, and has played a pivotal role in the Quagga project. It is also importantly a critical conservation area for two rare fynbos vegetation types, Swartland Alluvium Fynbos and Swartland Shale Renosterveld, both critically endangered habitats boast an extensive list of highly threatened and endemic plant species and provide refuge for many highly threatened species. One such important inhabitant is the endangered geometric tortoise, one of the worldโ€™s rarest reptiles. After a fire swept through Elandsberg in 2012 and burnt through most of the geometric tortoise habitat, a concerted and magnanimous effort by the reserve ensured refugia, enabling maximum recruitment and survival of the affected animals. Through ongoing research and protection, the reserve is working to ensure the survival of this endangered tortoise. In recognition of its importance to conservation, Elandsberg Nature Reserve was the first reserve approached and willing to enter into CapeNatureโ€™s Biodiversity Stewardship Programme. It was declared a S23 Nature Reserve, in terms of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, in order to safeguard the reserve and all of its inhabitants in perpetuity and contributes significantly to the provincial and national conservation estate.

TMFโ€™s ongoing support of CapeNatureโ€™s Biodiversity Stewardship Programme has proudly contributed to the restoration and protection of critical biodiversity areas such as the Elandsberg Nature Reserve.

TMFโ€™s support of @capenatureโ€™s Biodiversity Stewardship Programme has contributed to the restoration and protection of important biodiversity areas such as the Bontebok Ridge Nature Reserve. A short 15 min drive from Wellington, in the Western Capeโ€™s Winelands district, you will find @bontebokridge, a beautiful private nature reserve where guests can immerse themselves in the critically endangered lowland fynbos and renosterveld, whilst enjoying guided game drives. Surrounded by the magnificent Limietberg Mountain Range, the 400 ha reserve forms part of the Renosterveld Conservancy and is home to Eland, Bontebok, Springbok, Grey Rhebuck , Blue Wildebeest and Sable, as well as prime examples of animals that formed part of the Quagga project. It is also home to some spectacular birdlife and an incredible array of special lowland flora species, such as Serruria candicans, Leucadendron corymbosum, Protea burchellii and Watsonia dubia, to name but a few. This Reserve was one of the first sites to be proclaimed a Nature Reserve in perpetuity and to conclude an agreement as part of CapeNatureโ€™s Biodiversity Stewardship Programme, ensuring that the rich biodiversity of this region will be conserved for generations to come.

Over the years, the Table Mountain Fund has invest Over the years, the Table Mountain Fund has invested approximately R25 million into land purchase, capacity building of and collaboration between partners, restoration of priority biodiversity contained within protected areas, and formal and informal protection of biodiversity through the Biodiversity Stewardship Programme.

Biodiversity stewardship is an approach to protect and manage land in priority biodiversity areas through an agreement between private and communal landowners and the relevant conservation authority. It recognises the landowners as the custodians of biodiversity and, since the start of the programme, TMF's role has been to provide financial assistance to these landowners who voluntarily sign their land up for the benefit of us all โ€“ and our future generations.

Since TMFโ€™s inception, we have positioned oursel Since TMFโ€™s inception, we have positioned ourselves to be pivotal in enabling and supporting the growth of the protected area network of the CFR. Ensuring that our expansion strategies are underpinned by scientific and systematic biodiversity planning and a healthy dose of pragmatism, the local conservation community has acted as pioneers on the global stage when it comes to establishing private protected areas and unlocking resources to ensure the longevity of our biodiversity. Since the first provincial protected area expansion strategy of 2010, the protected area network has grown by approximately 40%. And TMF was there every step of the way.

On 29 September 2022, TMFโ€™s Project Coordinator On 29 September 2022, TMFโ€™s Project Coordinator Carla Wood attended the @CapeNature Stewardship Awards evenings where the Table Mountain Fund was given a special award in recognition and appreciation of an outstanding contribution made towards biodiversity conservation in the Western Cape.

The three awards evenings form part of the Millennium Trust-TMF funded CapeNature Biodiversity Stewardship Programme project. The purpose of this project is to deliver stewardship assistance to landowners who have signed contracts with CapeNature declaring their properties or portions thereof โ€œContract Nature Reservesโ€ or by entering into โ€œBiodiversity Agreementsโ€ supporting landowners with training and knowledge sharing and in implementing management actions on the Stewardship sites which will benefit the biodiversity conservation of the properties. Through an elaborate partnership between CapeNature, Conservation at Work and TMF, the formal Protected Area Network of the Cape Floral Region has grown considerably since funding support for the project began in 2011.

We couldn't agree more! If our children are exposed to the wonder of our natural world their love and appreciation for it will grow and they will in turn become its future custodians.

TMFโ€™s Pride Programme has a very strong youth focus and we are incredibly proud of the work that our project teams are undertaking to ensure that we are raising a generation that is passionately dedicated to conserving and protecting our planet's diverse and awe-inspiring biodiversity.

Here in the Cape we are lucky to have some of the Here in the Cape we are lucky to have some of the worldโ€™s most spectacular natural spaces right on our doorstep. These spring school holidays get your kids outside and show them just how magical and awe-inspiring our fabulous fynbos truly is. Around the world numerous studies have been conducted looking at the benefits that spending time outdoors has on children. One thing that these studies agree on is that kids who spend time outside are happier, less stressed and more attentive! Be it 30min or 3 hours, spending time outdoors will build confidence, promote creativity, inspire imagination, teach responsibility and leadership, and reduce anxiety. Importantly, it also teaches children to respect our natural world. If children are not exposed to our natural environment how can we possibly expect them to respect and protect it!
